Thanks to reader Aleks Witko, who sent in the enclosed shots of the SS-ified (but certainly not sissified) 2008 edition of Bumblebee. The Transformers crew was shooting scenes at Drexel University in Philly, and Aleks scored some nice overhead shots of the car down on the street below. (One nice thing about movie sets: the lighting’s going to be good.) Even better (for him), he reports, ” Lucky for me, I also got to meet Megan Fox.” Lucky, indeed.

Last year at the Goodwood Festival of Speed we spied our first Lotus 2-Eleven hypercar in the flesh. Turned out the owner was our friend, Patrick O’Neill, who had graciously agreed to be the lone Lotus representative in the supercar category. Apparently when Patrick lined up in the paddock to take his shot at the hill on day 2, a familiar face appeared at his side. While he wasn’t sure exactly who it was, he knew he knew that mug from somewhere. Turned out it was another American named Patrick - Patrick Dempsey. That’s right, McDreamy himself. While O’Neill chatted with Dempsey he learned that the actor was quite a Lotus fan as well as a promising racer. Dempsey asked if he could go along for the ride and O’Neill obliged. It took a little while, but O’Neill just sent us a video clip of their encounter.

What you’ll see in this video clip is just a snippet of the hour or so that the two Patricks spent together on that morning in West Sussex. As O’Neill describes it, “This was a cool experience…I was very lucky to be able to drive my Lotus 2-Eleven in the Goodwood Festival of Speed last year. Patrick Dempsey. AKA Dr. McDreamy, is a Lotus fan and asked for a ride. I got to spend over an hour with him and he is a great guy and a real racer.” Watch the clip closely and you’ll notice the Pininfarina P4/5 custom Enzo of James Glickenhaus ahead of them and an Aston Martin behind being driven by former F1 champion Damon Hill behind. Enjoy. Thanks for sharing, Patrick!

Up until today, we’ve been referring to the new truck as the Appalachian, though reports now indicate that it will drop that moniker. Apparently, the Indian company wants to highlight its own name in an effort to build some much-needed brand recognition in a market it has never played in before. For that reason, some sort of nondescript name made from numbers and/or letters is to be expected.

Mahindra’s newly un-named truck will feature a new four-cylinder diesel engine produced just for the States with help from Bosch and AVL. Power output should hover around 150 horses, though torque is expected to be a massive 300 lb-ft. Coupled with what should be reasonable fuel economy from just 2.2 liters of displacement, we think that Mahindra’s new pickup could re-ignite the compact pickup market in no time at all. At least one domestic brand might be thinking the same thing, as this spy shot indicates that one of Detroit’s finest brought one over for testing.

Maybe the ‘Cuda is alive after all. While we have speculated about the existence of one ever since we first heard a hint of the SEMA show car from last year, all we’ve had to work with since are rumors and sketches of what might be. Well, today at the weekly Cars and Coffee show in Irvine, a genuine ‘Cuda Concept was parked right in the midst of everything. A convertible nonetheless. It just sat there with only a few people really spotting it for what it was. Considering that real original ’70s ‘Cudas are plentiful at this show and that several Challenger SRT-8s have already made appearances, it doesn’t seem surprising that people might not spot this concept immediately. The surprising part is that it is painted purple with a white convertible top that can’t be ignored no matter how hard you try. While the car sported no badges, it wore a mock “NEWCUDA” Colorado plate and had a seemingly stock Challenger-like interior, complete with a Hurst pistol-grip shifter for the automatic trans. While many of the details emulate the 70-74 cars, the bulk says Challenger. Particularly fun is the grill and headlight setup and the Shaker hood scoop. Very nicely done. The only badge we spotted was a big G on the front fenders, the mark of Metalcrafter’s Gaffoglio boys. Looks like we have a SEMA ‘08 preview on our hands.

Something wicked, and white, and silver, and grey, and covered in protective tape, this way comes. In fact, it is already here: a lot full of Nissan GT-Rs in Jacksonville, Florida. Amassed like the automatons in I, Robot, all of them await their chance to embarrass cars costing nearly twice as much on U.S. soil. And a few will probably end up in accidents, ditches and tire walls as well, sadly. Click the link to visit the forum and check out more photos of what’s in store for U.S. roads and garage mahals. Thanks for the tip, Jeff!

As the skies finally cleared this morning, us hacks finally managed to get in a single practice run here at Milan Dragway for the Ford Racing Invitational. Ford invited some media out to race race some Mustangs as part of the NMRA Ford Nationals weekend. In my first-ever run on a dragstrip, I managed to not embarrass myself and get decent time in my Shelby GT500. My reaction time was a bit on the slow side at 0.6149s as I was seeing the tree for the first time. Once I hooked up, the car flew down the strip before I backed off just a bit too soon, not knowing where the finish line was. I still ended up with 12.8692 ET at 106.56. At the 1,000 ft mark I was at 103.70mph and 10.875 sec. Now that I know where I’m going hopefully I can do a little better this afternoon. Oh, the guy in the orange convertible? Ehh, not so fast, better luck next time.

Many motorcycles in today’s market feature anti-lock brakes, including models from Honda like the Interceptor and Silverwing scooters. Now, though, the red-winged manufacturer of motorcycles has announced a new system which completely removes the rider’s direct connection with the front and rear brakes. Instead of a cable connection, the system uses brake-by-wire technology and allows an on-board computer to apply pressure to both the front and rear brakes as it sees fit. This new system is expected to debut on sportbikes first, which raises some eyebrows in the cycle-riding community. The highest performing bikes have ridiculously powerful brakes which are capable of locking up the front tire very easily. Still, hardcore riders have proven very reluctant to give up any control to computers, especially on race tracks, where supersport bikes are expected to thrive. Being Honda, though, there is a prevailing sense that the technology will work. Expect the new combined ABS system to proliferate to all of Honda’s two-wheelers in the near future.

Here is the SPEED TV schedule:

All times Eastern

Saturday, June 14, 9:00 PM - Sunday, June 15, 9:30 AM: Live Coverage

SPEED airs assorted NASCAR and other (summarily unwatchable) assorted programming between Noon and 9:00 PM today.

Web Coverage:

RadioLeMans.com has excellent live streaming audio. Just go to their homepage and click the Listen Live link. It dovetails nicely with the SPEED TV coverage (when it’s on).

You can also get web video of the race there at Club24Web, but you will need to open your wallet to do so.

We’re here at Milan Dragway for the 2nd annual Ford Racing invitational and just like the guys at Indy, drag racers don’t run in the rain. Ford invites the a bunch of Michigan-based media out to Milan during NMRA weekend so that we can try out our quarter-mile skills in a bunch of Mustangs. Since this is bracket racing, where the goal is to be consistent from run to run rather than just fast, we have 17 different Mustangs here including GT500s, GT500KRs, Roush machines and others with assorted Ford Racing parts. We were all assigned cars randomly and I drew this GT500 that serves as the Pace Car at the Homestead, FL track. After rains yesterday morning and early afternoon it finally let up just before 3:00 PM when practice sessions were due to start. When it was finally our turn to hit the track, we headed out to the staging lanes and waited. Before we got to the line, though, it started raining again and it didn’t look like it was going to let up any time soon. The weather is supposed to be clear today, so hopefully I’ll get my chance to defend the honor of Autoblog.

An eagle-eyed reader has spotted a hybrid Dodge Caravan in the Chicago, Illinois area. Don’t get your panties in a bunch, though, as this hybrid is not the sort consumers have come to know and love as of late. This Caravan has no electrical propulsion system, but rather two front ends. Before Honda and Toyota forever tied the hybrid term to gasoline-electric drivetrains, it was used to describe vehicles constructed out of various donor parts, such as this one. After all, no one has yet marketed a better name for dual front fascia automobiles. Now obviously this Caravan looks nothing like the one in which your mom carpooled you to soccer practice. Especially since hers probably had a rear end. However, that might be where the differences end, at least from what we can tell. Besides the obvious exterior alterations, there are no hints at what other tricks the minivan might have up its sleeve. It makes for a pretty clever advertisement for an alignment shop though. Nothing quite screams we’re good at getting the wheels straight more than a vehicle equipped with two steering racks. Not to mention the fact that the paint happens to be the color of the Incredible Hulk. Although, as far as utility goes, we can’t image it would make a good shop runner since chopping off the rear hatch looks to have significantly reduced available cargo space. Be sure and check out the lime green Dodge Caravan that couldn’t help but catch a reader’s eye in the gallery below and judge for yourself. Thanks for the tip Bdubb!

A company called Fat Shark offers one of the coolest R/C cars we’ve ever seen. How so? Its system has a camera mounted in the car’s driver’s seat. It transmits its signal wirelessly to VR-style goggles that give the operator a first-person view of the terrain ahead of the car itself. That alone would be neat, but the camera has pan and tilt functionality that the driver controls by simply moving his or her head to “look” in each direction. The video pasted after the jump gives you a taste of what what you’d see if the glasses were strapped to your noggin. Granted, you’ll look like a dork with the antenna-festooned goggles on, but at least you’ll be having fun. Fat Shark also sells the camera and components separately, so you can use them on model airplanes, too. Thanks for the tip, David!

Way back in February, General Motors announced it would be listing all of it Certified Pre-Owned vehicles on eBay Motors, and it took until now to actually make that happen. To go along with GM, Chrysler and Lexus have also joined up, with eBay Motors making a special section of its website specifically for CPO vehicles. The new site, which can be found here, went live yesterday and is sponsored exclusively by Lexus. It’s also provided at no cost to any dealer looking for another outlet to advertise its inventory.

A quick check of the new hub shows that both eBay’s classic auction-style listings and regular classified ads are listed together. The site’s search functionality allows users to find vehicles located near their zip code, meaning it should prove awfully easy to find that brand-spanking-used Chrysler Sebring you’ve been foaming at the mouth for.

For those who just can’t get enough NASCAR in their lives comes the Officially Licensed NASCAR 60th Year Motorcycle Series. The bikes were commissioned by Destination Daytona and built by Thunder Mountain Custom Cycles. Specifications include a genuine Harley-Davidson Twin Cam 110B motor matched to one of HD’s new six-speed overdrive transmissions. While it’s not a bad looking bike with its black-and-red paint scheme and whitewall tires, we question whether the fact that it’s status as one of 60 officially licensed bikes makes it worth the $48,600 asking price. After all, there is nothing revolutionary about the bike, and it could be replicated for way less money. Just saying…

Whatever your particular opinion regarding the pricing, the bikes do come with some perks, like tickets to a private VIP motorcycle delivery event at the Coke Pavilion at Destination Daytona on July 3, along with tickets to the race that weekend. For the true circle track junkie, perhaps that would make the bike a better deal. The last bike, serial number 60, will be auctioned off to benefit Kyle Petty’s Victory Junction charity in Daytona during the weekend of the Coke Zero 400, which will run as it usually does on the first Saturday of July.

While Ford’s giving the Fusion an LCD large enough to watch feature films, Magna has joined up with Swiss firm u-blox and Germany’s Paragon to develop a navigation system that puts the map display in your rearview mirror. The system is called MirrorPilot, and it does look like a slick way to add factory navigation with a minimum of effort on the automaker’s part. It’s also far nicer than suction-cupping some aftermarket unit to the windshield and dealing with its tangle of cables. It’s not just a mirror with a display; the MirrorPilot incorporates a GPS receiver and antenna, as well as a speaker. The mirror itself self-dims electrochromically, and the display automatically zooms at intersections and also comes with a remote control. The screen may be small, but the cost is large; this unit will be priced above $1,000 when it goes on sale in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. While it’s a nice idea, it’s not $1,000 worth of nice, especially with such a diminutive screen. We’ll buy a cheaper unit and stock up on zip ties to keep the wires in check, which should leave enough in our pocket for a very nice dinner out - we’ll just punch up a fancy restaurant on the POI menu.

We’ve seen a lot of stupid car dealer commercials in our time, but this one may well take the cake. The genius comics at The Daily Show found a local Dallas-area ad that features a Barack Obama impersonator hocking Kia Sorrentos for $11,888. So if you have a job and you have $199, you may want to hit the jump to see a lame commercial followed by the comedic stylings of one Jon Stewart. Funny stuff. Thanks for the tip, John!

With gas prices as high as they are, it might seem hard to believe that some gas companies aren’t profitable, but apparently Exxon Mobil isn’t doing as well as they might wish. The company just announced that it will be selling off its gas stations for financial reasons. We suspect that the industry keeps itself shrouded in mystery to protect its profit at times, but Exxon Mobil, Chevron and ConocoPhillips, to name a few, have all stated that certain nebulous factors in the supply, demand and refinery process have led to a steep drop in profitability. You know, dozens of billions instead of hundreds. To that end Exxon, for one, is shedding its stations.

Included in the sale will be the company’s namesake gas stations. The retail group includes 820 self-operated stations and about 1,400 dealer managed outlets. The company wants suitors to know that this isn’t desperation and that it will take at least a few years to finalize any sale. Because of the way the competition reacts to moves like this in the oil industry, we might see quite a bit of this sort of thing in the near future, as well. Hopefully this won’t mean further consolidation and even higher pump prices for us motorists. Thanks for the tip, Josh!

A few months back, Tesla Motors sued Fisker Automotive for allegedly stealing information related to the production of its upcoming plug-in electric sedan named Whitestar and using it to develop its series-hybird, the Karma. Yesterday, a judge ruled in favor of Fisker Automotive by allowing the case to go into arbitration outside the courtroom, which was apparently part of the original agreement between Tesla and Henrik Fisker in the first place. It appears that Tesla went outside that original agreement by bringing forth its lawsuit in the first place, though Tesla may have considered that contract void as the original lawsuit alleged that it was signed merely to gain access to confidential information.

Although the arbitration is to be handled outside of court, the judge has scheduled a management conference this August, perhaps to be sure that negotiations are moving along. This is good news for Fisker, which is currently working to get its Karma PHEV sedan to market by the fourth-quarter of 2009.

We’re told on the GM FastLane Blog that the pics are a reward for the overwhelmingly enthusiastic response to the first set of shots of the Camaro Coupe, which apparently meant a lot to the team of engineers testing the vehicle. While not much is revealed on these preproduction models that we didn’t already know, the second shot shows the convertible’s profile with the soft-top up, and it appears that the strong lines of the coupe have not been sacrificed by the retractable roof. Feel free to peruse both pics in our gallery below while we wait for larger ones to pop up.

But who’s going to complain about looking at new high-res photos of the 2009 Chevy Corvette Z06? Sure, it’s not the ZR1, but it’s still a damn fine car and for 2009 is getting a few tweaks that might be noteworthy to some. The first that’s immediately evident is the Cyber Gray Metallic paint color, which is also joined by Blade Silver Metallic. With the deletion of Machine Sliver Metallic, the Z06 exterior color palette now stands at nine colors. Also new are ’spider’-design 10-spoke wheels exclusive to the Z06, and they look damn good framing those large rotors and red calipers. Less exciting is the new bright surround around the Corvette logo on the hood and redesigned Z06 sill plates, though owners of the ‘09 model will get a standard power hatch pull-down, Bluetooth as an option and the 10.5-quart dry sump oil system from the ZR1. There’s some more new stuff in GM’s own words after the jump, but we’re too busy looking at the pics to tell you what they are.

The sights confirmed that it was was Car Guy Heaven, even if the weather was more reminiscent of Hell on Earth. That, in a nutshell, sums up the 2008 edition of the Greenwich Concours d’Elegance, a 2-day automotive carnival that never ceased to amaze, no matter how many times we walked around the grounds. Each pass seemed to reveal something new — something we somehow missed just a few minutes earlier. As always, Day 1 was dedicated to American cars and Day 2 paid tribute to the Europeans. Oh, and temps were in the mid-90s and very humid both days. That didn’t make it less awesome, though. Just more…sticky.

There was no major international incident or terrorist crackdown happening. Apparently, Chrysler Canada CEO Reid Bigland grabbed a fresh-off-the-line Dodge Challenger SRT8 and headed over to Detroit from his office in Windsor, Ontario. Agents of the Customs and Border Protection Service decided they wanted to check out Chrysler’s new muscle car. Several agents spent time going over the new Challenger and asking questions about it rather than processing travelers through the downtown Detroit border crossing point. Traffic quickly got backed up and according to Bigland there was about an hour delay by the time the agents let him proceed. Oh, and they never even asked for Bigland’s ID.

You don’t need to spend much time with a Miata to “get” why so many drivers are attracted to them. Perfectly executed and relentlessly entertaining, it’s no surprise that Mazda’s little roadster is the track-day weapon of choice for a number of people. While countless 4-banger Miatas do their thing on the autocross circuit, one Mark Snell was interested in kicking things up a level so he could run with the big boys in their ‘Vettes and similar machinery. His solution? Drop a Mazda 2.5L V6 into his blue roadster’s engine bay, then modify and tune it to the point where it’s pushing 180 horsepower to the rear wheels. The view underhood is plenty cool — we especially dig those Suzuki GSX-R1000 throttle bodies he’s added. The Miata sounds pretty mean, too. Follow the jump for a video in which Snell gives a tour of his car and discusses the car and the modifications he’s made before taking viewers for a quick spin. We believe that this is what fun looks like. Thanks for the tip, Ryan!
