Is this heaven? No, it’s a storage lot in Florida

Something wicked, and white, and silver, and grey, and covered in protective tape, this way comes. In fact, it is already here: a lot full of Nissan GT-Rs in Jacksonville, Florida. Amassed like the automatons in I, Robot, all of them await their chance to embarrass cars costing nearly twice as much on U.S. soil. And a few will probably end up in accidents, ditches and tire walls as well, sadly. Click the link to visit the forum and check out more photos of what’s in store for U.S. roads and garage mahals. Thanks for the tip, Jeff!

It’s no West Wing: Japanese drama debuts about woman car salesman in ’70s

All you vintage Japanese automotive fans, we may have found your show. It’s called “Top Sales” and is being broadcast in Japan by the government-funded NHK media giant. Apparently (we don’t speak Japanese, so we are taking someone’s word on this), the plot has to do with a young woman’s journey through the male-dominated automotive sales industry at a fictional company called “Omiyake Motors.” As success often happens so readily on television shows, she starts out on the car lot in sales and quickly works her way up to president of the company. We’ll admit that doesn’t sound overly exciting, but the show is set three decades ago - this means a lot of thinly-disguised 70’s-era Toyotas, Nissans and Hondas zooming around. See if you can name some of the classics in the screen shots… Thanks for the tip, catgirlshyla!

BREAKING: Chrysler and Nissan announce major supply agreements, shared products

Following the announcement this past January that Nissan would be supplying Chrysler with a new car based of the Versa’s platform, the two automakers announced today that more exchange is on the horizon, including a new small car for Chrysler and a Dodge-based pickup for Nissan.

The unnamed small car will be built by Nissan in Japan utilizing a Chrysler design and will be sold in North America, Europe and other markets in 2010. On the other side of the spectrum, Chrysler will build a full-size pick-up for Nissan that will share design cues with the rest of the Nissan line and be built at Chrysler’s Saltillo Assembly Plant in Mexico. Sales of the pick-up will begin in North America in 2011.

The move is part of an effort by both automakers to utilize each other’s global manufacturing facilities and finally gets Carlos Ghosn, Nissan’s CEO, the American automaker partnership he’s been looking for since last year.

We’re hoping on a conference call to see if either automaker releases more information, but in the meantime check Chrysler’s press release after the jump.

UPDATE: No word on whether or not the new Nissan pick-up will use Chrysler’s hybrid drivetrain. Nissan spokespeople are not calling this a partnership, rather an “OEM exchange” and nothing more.
UPDATE 2: The Nissan pick-up will be a full-size light truck.
UPDATE 3: The Chrysler small car will be on a Nissan-developed platform and will be covered in Chrysler-designed sheetmetal. The platform will not be based of the Versa. Nissan reps couldn’t answer any questions about whether or not the small car will share any design cues from the Dodge Hornet concept.

Nissan GT-R V-Spec lap times stun observers

Click above for a high-res gallery of the Nissan GT-R V-Spec.

The prototype Nissan GT-R V-Spec, wearing the “Victory Specification” designation reserved for the ultra high-performance Nissan GT-R, has been caught lapping the famed Nürburgring at an incredible, if not simply unbelievable, 7:25 per lap. This, according to bystanders trackside. (For comparison, Walter Röhrl lapped the Ring in 7:28 while driving a Porsche Carrera GT in 2004.)

In contrast to the standard Nissan GT-R, that made the run around the ‘Ring in 7:38, the GT-R V-Spec has a new front splitter, modified rear spoiler, and different wheels. A more extensive use of carbon fiber has reportedly reduced the weight by upwards of 330 pounds. Of course, Nissan engineers also tweaked the twin-turbo powerplant for another 70 horses… or so. Thanks for the tip, XeroK00L!

Beijing ‘08 Preview: Nissan Livina C-Gear set to debut

Click image for a gallery of the current Nissan Livina range

The Nissan Livina “world car” will get the allroad-ish treatment next week when the new C-Gear variant bows at Auto China in Beijing. The C-Gear follows the Livina Geniss/Grand Livina minivan and Livina hatch to market, and it’s essentially just a sportier-looking, cosmetically butched-up version of the latter. There’s room for five with motivation coming from a 1.6L four matched with either a 4-speed auto or a 5-speed manual. Don’t expect to see it here — the Livina series of cars isn’t meant for North American consumption. The Chinese-market C-Gear will be produced at the Dongfeng plant in Guangdong province.

Nearly 700 Brits plunked down pre-order deposits of £3,500 (about $7,000) within the first 48 hours of Nissan’s hot GT-R going on sale, proving demand for the latest Japanese supercar doesn’t seem to be diminishing. Customers in the UK don’t seem to be deterred by the GT-R’s base sales price of £52,900 (about $105,000), or the fact they won’t see delivery until March 2009. After our “First Drive” in the GT-R, you won’t see us ridiculing frenzied buyers…

Nissan Intima Teana brochure leaked out

Click above for a gallery of the Nissan Teana brochure.

The Scoopers of Cars have gotten their hands on a scanned brochure of the production version of the Nissan Intima concept, and it seems that in addition to getting a mass-market makeover, it will also be sporting a Teana badge when it goes on sale in Japan. The transition from concept to production has been uncharacteristically kind to the Teana, with the tightly drawn headlamps, plummeting C-pillar and elongated tail lamps surviving, but the suicide doors and 22nd century interior must have been scrapped due to feasibility issues. We’ll get our first official taste of the Teana when it’s finally revealed on April 20th at the Beijing Motor Show.

VIDEO: Nissan GT-R gets flogged around Reno/Fernley

While we weren’t equipped with the means to record our time on the track with the Nissan GT-R, our friend Ty from Exhaustnote.com had the foresight to bring along a couple of video cameras to Reno/Fernley to show how Godzilla tackles the twisties. We’ve posted two videos: the first is a few hot laps with Mr. R. behind the wheel and the second is a great five-minute clip inside the car with Steve Millen giving the blow-by-blow on how the GT-R handles the rigors of track duty. Check them both after the jump.

VIDEO: You think NYC cabbies are crazy? Try Baghdad

Filed under: Taxi driver, TaxiDriver, SteveBent, Steve Bent, Nissan, Iraq, video — @ 8:29 pm

Iraq taxi rideDuring the 2008 New York Auto Show we took a short cab ride from the Javits Center to the hotel, and our driver straddled lanes, blew lights, and narrowly missed around three dozen cars. That’s nothing compared to this video of a Baghdad cab ride from hell. Photographer Steve Bent of The Sunday Times was traveling to a shoot in an old Nissan 4×4 with a driver and a man he only refers to as the “boss” in the front seat. Bent needed to get to his shoot during morning traffic, and the driver went so far as to pull a Ronin, driving the wrong way down one-way streets while leaning on the horn.

That’s kind of nuts, but then the boss man pulls out a 9mm pistol and starts waving it around so other drivers could get the hint that they really needed to move. The “boss” even fires to drive the message home just seconds before arriving at an army checkpoint, where his carries on a completely normal conversation with the soldiers, who seem not at all surprised at the gunplay. When asked why he fired his pistol, the “boss” explained the driver in front of them wouldn’t get out of the way. That was enough for the soldiers, who then waved them through the checkpoint, according to Bent. In New York, a move like this would get your name in the paper and your butt in a jail cell. In Iraq, it gets you to your destination on time. Follow the jump to watch for yourselves. The good stuff starts about a minute in, so be patient. Thanks for the tip, catgirlshyla!

First Drive: 2009 Nissan GT-R

Click above to view our massive gallery of the 2009 Nissan GT-R.

With only 20 miles separating us from North Lake Tahoe, it’s obvious that I hadn’t secured the hood of our Super Silver Nissan GT-R after poking and prodding inside the engine bay. The left side of the bonnet is raised about a quarter-inch and flapping slightly at speed, so we pull off into a newborn subdivision to slam it shut. I step back inside and catch a glimpse of a silver Corvette in the side view mirror. The telltale air intake on the front bumper confirms that the man behind the wheel is an aficionado; it’s a C6 Z06 and there’s no doubt the driver knows what the GT-R is.
