Is this heaven? No, it’s a storage lot in Florida

Something wicked, and white, and silver, and grey, and covered in protective tape, this way comes. In fact, it is already here: a lot full of Nissan GT-Rs in Jacksonville, Florida. Amassed like the automatons in I, Robot, all of them await their chance to embarrass cars costing nearly twice as much on U.S. soil. And a few will probably end up in accidents, ditches and tire walls as well, sadly. Click the link to visit the forum and check out more photos of what’s in store for U.S. roads and garage mahals. Thanks for the tip, Jeff!

2008 International Engine of the Year Award nominees announced

The “International Engine of the Year Award” is a big deal as far as bragging rights go in this industry. Think of it like the Academy Awards for engines. However, instead of members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences voting, you have 62 renowned motoring journalists, from 30 countries, casting ballots for their favorite fossil fuel burner.

Last year’s winner (pictured above) was BMW’s twin-turbo 3.0-liter inline-6. This year’s list of nominees includes Nissan’s 3.8-liter twin-turbo V6 (found in the Nissan GT-R), Mitsubishi’ 2.0-liter twin-turbo I4 (Mitsubishi EVO X), Audi’s 5.2-liter V10 (Audi S8), Chevrolet’s 6.2-liter supercharged V8 (Corvette ZR1), and BMW’s 4.0-liter V8 (BMW M3). Let’s sit back and listen to the orchestra for a bit… the winners don’t get announced until May 7, at Engine Expo 2008, in Stuttgart, Germany.

Autoblog Podcast #92

It’s been a quiet week in Cardom, so for Autoblog Podcast #92 we take time to address some of the excellent emails we’ve gotten at our new podcast at autoblog dot com address. Feel free to send in questions, comments, SHO-centric ribbing, whatever! We can’t promise that it will make it onto the ‘cast, but it just might. Before we dive into the binary mailbag, we discuss some of the vehicles that we’ve been sampling - so basically Damon talks about what he’s been hooning around in at track events. Thanks for your 57 minutes this week!

Nissan GT-R V-Spec lap times stun observers

Click above for a high-res gallery of the Nissan GT-R V-Spec.

The prototype Nissan GT-R V-Spec, wearing the “Victory Specification” designation reserved for the ultra high-performance Nissan GT-R, has been caught lapping the famed Nürburgring at an incredible, if not simply unbelievable, 7:25 per lap. This, according to bystanders trackside. (For comparison, Walter Röhrl lapped the Ring in 7:28 while driving a Porsche Carrera GT in 2004.)

In contrast to the standard Nissan GT-R, that made the run around the ‘Ring in 7:38, the GT-R V-Spec has a new front splitter, modified rear spoiler, and different wheels. A more extensive use of carbon fiber has reportedly reduced the weight by upwards of 330 pounds. Of course, Nissan engineers also tweaked the twin-turbo powerplant for another 70 horses… or so. Thanks for the tip, XeroK00L!

Spy Shots: Nissan GT-R Spec V confirmed, caught running the ‘Ring

Click above for high-res gallery of Nissan GT-R Spec V spy shots at the ‘Ring

Those spy shots we showed you yesterday of a higher-performance GT-R have been confirmed by inside sources as the Spec V model, which will both shed poundage and gain power compared to its baser sibling. Weight is expected to drop by over 300 pounds thanks to extensive use of carbon fiber, and as for how much power the twin-turbo 3.8L V6 will make in Spec V trim… some are saying 550 - 600 horsepower, though we think that’s a bit optimistic as well as just overkill. These shots show the GT-R Spec V attacking a corner at the Nurburgring, and in the German sun we can see the new front splitter below the grille and carbon fiber rear wing much clearer. The current GT-R’s performance has already surprised us all, but it’s clear that this is just beginning for Nissan’s new halo car.

Nearly 700 Brits plunked down pre-order deposits of £3,500 (about $7,000) within the first 48 hours of Nissan’s hot GT-R going on sale, proving demand for the latest Japanese supercar doesn’t seem to be diminishing. Customers in the UK don’t seem to be deterred by the GT-R’s base sales price of £52,900 (about $105,000), or the fact they won’t see delivery until March 2009. After our “First Drive” in the GT-R, you won’t see us ridiculing frenzied buyers…

VIDEO: Nissan GT-R gets flogged around Reno/Fernley

While we weren’t equipped with the means to record our time on the track with the Nissan GT-R, our friend Ty from Exhaustnote.com had the foresight to bring along a couple of video cameras to Reno/Fernley to show how Godzilla tackles the twisties. We’ve posted two videos: the first is a few hot laps with Mr. R. behind the wheel and the second is a great five-minute clip inside the car with Steve Millen giving the blow-by-blow on how the GT-R handles the rigors of track duty. Check them both after the jump.

First Drive: 2009 Nissan GT-R

With only 20 miles separating us from North Lake Tahoe, it’s obvious that I hadn’t secured the hood of our Super Silver Nissan GT-R after poking and prodding inside the engine bay. The left side of the bonnet is raised about a quarter-inch and flapping slightly at speed, so we pull off into a newborn subdivision to slam it shut. I step back inside and catch a glimpse of a silver Corvette in the side view mirror. The telltale air intake on the front bumper confirms that the man behind the wheel is an aficionado; it’s a C6 Z06 and there’s no doubt the driver knows what the GT-R is.

VIDEO: How Nissan builds the GT-R

For those of us who just can’t get enough of the Nissan GT-R, Lou Ann Hammond of Carlist.com recently had a unique chance to learn more about the manufacturing process of the Z06 and 911 Turbo slayer from Nissan’s North American product manager, Peter Bedrosian. The resulting video reveals fun facts about the GT-R that you might not have known otherwise. For instance, did you know each GT-R that goes down the line is fine tuned by hand? Or that each body is vibration tested? The last portion of the video also shows extensive footage of twin-turbocharged V6 being carefully assembled by hand. Click the image above to check out the video.
