Ford launches new performance site for enthusiasts

Filed under: performance, FordPerformance, ford performance, ford — @ 3:33 pm

FoMoCo has decided to provide Ford enthusiasts of all stripes a single website to cater to their performance needs, lusts and communities. FordPerformance.com will feature updates on the participating Ford clubs and forums that obsess over anything with a Blue Oval, give people a heads-up on events, upcoming products and sneak peaks at the next-generation Mustang. In addition to information about current and planned products, the site will also feature historical facts on models and sub-brands that have defined Ford’s racing pedigree over the last several decades. The Ford Performance Info Center will even put you into contact with Ford staff to organize meet-ups and referrals, plus providing all the pertinent information on how you can get that SVT Contour up to snuff.

While the site’s focus has a decidedly Mustang flavor so far, more diversity is bound to find its way online, and we’re sure a Taurus SHO page is in the works to sate John’s insufferable appetite for Yamaha-sourced V8s.

Ford’s press release is posted after the jump.

5.0L V8 could return in 2010 Mustang

The pressure is on now for Ford, which has had the ponycar market to itself for the better part of a decade. With the return of the Chevy Camaro and Dodge Challenger, Ford will surely be stepping up the Mustang’s performance when it receives a makeover for 2010. In an interview with stuff.co.nz, Bill Osborne, President of Ford Australia, claims that Ford is considering using a 5.0L V8 for the new Falcon - the same engine being developed for the upcoming Mustang. While nothing has been officially confirmed by Ford, this is further evidence that the 5.0 will be making a return since it was dropped from the Mustang back in 1995.

Assuming the 5.0 V8 will be available for the 2010 Mustang, there are many questions that still remain. It’s possible the 5.0 could become standard, but it could also be reserved for use in a special edition Mustang like a Boss or Mach 1. There is also the question of how the engine is being developed. The simplest answer is that it will be based on the current modular V8 architecture and could be a stroked version of the 4.6L V8.

We would love to see something similar to the 5.0 V8 in the Saleen Parnelli Jones Limited Edition Mustang that we sampled last year. With 400 bhp and 390 lb-ft of torque, it was a smooth and powerful engine that suited the Mustang well.

Ford’s Drive One campaign moving full speed ahead

After spending a few days with Ford’s main-marketing-man Jim Farley and his team, we can truly say that the excitement surrounding the company’s new Drive One marketing strategy is palpable. They believe that the story they have to tell is rather compelling; the real struggle will be convincing car-buyers that their vehicles are every bit as good as their competition from Japan — as recent studies indicate. To show people what’s going on behind the scenes, Farley and his posse brought Ford’s best and brightest engineers with them to Las Vegas to introduce their dealer-base to the new campaign. They let us tag along so we could see what all the fuss is about, and the dealers we spoke to seemed pretty pumped about Drive One and felt that Farley’s new team at Ford was finally listening to them and doing something with their input. Keep reading to find out what else we heard in Sin City.

It has a nice personality: Ford boosts Focus production by 30% to meet demand

We’ll admit it. We didn’t think sales of the 2008 Ford Focus would take off like they have, even after we had a 2008 Focus SES Coupe in the Autoblog Garage and for the most part liked it. The redesign for 2008 just left a bad taste in our mouths, and we didn’t think anyone would fall for those garish fender vents. For whatever reason, be it the car’s smooth ride, competitive pricing or exclusive availability of the SYNC system, the 2008 Focus is selling like crazy. Ford says that it sold 49,070 Focuses this year through March alone, which is up 23 percent compared to last year. More importantly, all of those additional Focus sales were to retail customers, not fleets. Last year the Blue Oval built 191,000 Focuses, but today it has announced that production will be ramped up at its Wayne Stamping and Assembly Plant so that 245,000 units can be built in 2008.

For comparison’s sake, Toyota sold 371,390 Corollas in 2007, while Honda sold 331,095 Civics and Chevy sold 200,620 Cobalts. The Corolla and Civic are both handily outselling their domestic competition so far this year, but the Focus is now slightly ahead of the Cobalt, which sold 48,024 units through March.

In the Autoblog Garage: 2008 F-350 King Ranch [w/VIDEO]

Autoblog drives the 2008 F-350 King Ranch Dually

It isn’t very often we get the opportunity to drive a vehicle with four wheels at the rear axle, so we were more than happy to parade around town with a completely loaded 2008 F-350 King Ranch for a week. With $4.20 per gallon diesel and an average of 11 mpg for this monster truck, it would run us about $140 just to fill the tank, so we probably wouldn’t be as interested in a long-term engagement. For those of you who use your truck to pay the bills, however, this big baby has all the power, comfort and technology you’ll ever need.

Power from the twin-turbo 6.4L Powerstroke diesel is incredible, with 350 hp and 650 pound-feet of torque, but at 231 inches from stem to stern, you need the grunt just to get going. The abundant torque helps you tow 18,000 pounds (!), and the integrated trailer brake controller helps you pull a load without an aftermarket setup.

The F-350 is a real work truck, and when you add the King Ranch package, you get amazing comfort and luxury that you would expect from a Lincoln Navigator. The leather covering the seats and touch areas feels like it comes from a high-end bomber jacket, and amenities like Audiophile sound, navigation, and moonroof give owners a little coddling during the work day. Hey, if your truck makes you money and the cash is coming in, why not drop $59,000 on something that can pay you back a little. Click on the video above to view our two-and-a-half-minute review, then click below for our high resolution gallery.

Production Ford Transit Connect SportVan debuts

Click above for the high-res photo

The current Crown Victoria wears many hats here in the States, as it is the transportation of choice for taxis, police, mob hitmen and senior citizens. With the eventual phasing out of North America’s last body-on-frame car platform comes the Transit Connect, which is already on sale overseas and ready for multitasking on our shores. We’ve already seen a Transit ready for taxi duty, catering, and cable installation, and now the Blue Oval is pushing the busy little work van into the performance market.

Ford of Europe has announced the Transit Connect SportVan, which comes fully equipped with Performance Blue paint, Ford GT-style racing stripe, and seven-spoke 18-inch rims. Power comes from a 1.8L Duratorq TDCi diesel, which likely won’t set the streets ablaze, but Ford provides some sporty features to make the working man’s Mini Cooper feel fast. Some features include a leather-wrapped steering wheel and gear knob, high quality leather seats with eight-way seat adjustment, ABS, traction control, and some bright-work for the dash. In the past, such news would mean little to us here in the States, but since the Transit Connect is headed our way, there is a chance we could one day see a SportVan on Woodward or Hollywood Blvd. Hit the jump to read the press release.

Analysts predict diesels to make up 20% of U.S. market by 2020

Filed under: sae world congress, SaeWorldCongress, Green, diesel, Toyota, ford — @ 10:28 am

Hybrid vehicles may hold most of the headlines right now, but both analysts and industry insiders agree that oil burners will comprise a far greater slice of the automotive propulsion market by 2020. BorgWarner CEO Tim Manganello told the SAE Automotive World Congress in Detroit that diesels would account for 20% of vehicles by 2020, and both Ford product chief Derrick Kuzak and Toyota engineering vice president Ed Mantey agreed with the assessment. Manganello based his prediction on powertrain trends in Europe, which already feature diesel engines in about half of its vehicles.

Hybrids were predicted to account for about 10% of the market by that time, which doesn’t quite match up with the technology’s considerable hype. We’re all for more diesel and hybrids on America’s streets, and with new oil-burners from Ford, GM, Honda and more already on the way, 20% sounds like a very attainable goal for 2020.

Next Ford Focus will be a “global project”, C1 platform coming Stateside

During the SAE World Congress in Detroit, Ford’s product chief, Derrick Kuzak, told attendees that the next generation Focus will benefit from the joint efforts of FoMoCo’s engineers here in the U.S. and abroad. The redesigned Focus is set to debut sometime in 2010 or 2011 and will be built off the C1 platform that underpins the current Euro Focus. According to Kuzak, 87-percent of the parts will be sourced from Ford’s global parts bin in a move to cut costs and globalize Ford’s engineering process. While we’ve heard this numerous times before, this is the first time a definitive timeline has been outlined for the official entry of the superior C1 platform to the U.S. market. Here’s hoping that Ford sees the light and we finally get ST and RS variants of the Focus here in the States.

New 2010 Ford 4.4-liter diesel engine scooped!

Filed under: Aqueous urea, AqueousUrea, 4.4-liter, f-150, diesel, breaking, ford — @ 11:15 am

At last week’s dealer show in Las Vegas, a picture of Ford’s upcoming 4.4-liter V8 diesel powerplant was leaked to the Internet… ouch. The new powerplant is hardly a secret (we were reporting the first hints of it in June 2006, and the legal issues surrounding the engine in June 2007), but this is the first time the public has seen a photo of the new diesel in its metallic flesh.

Designed to offer comparable acceleration to the current 5.4-liter gasoline Triton, the new engine should be rated at about 330 hp and 420 lb-ft of torque. Fuel economy is expected to be around 20% better than the gas-fed Triton. To meet tough emission standards, a NOx after-treatment called “aqueous urea” will be injected into the hot exhaust stream. While the additive cleans up the tailpipe exhaust, it will also be another fluid the consumer will have to maintain (Ford is promising the “urea tank” will only need replenishing during oil changes). Although it doesn’t look very attractive sitting naked on a stand atop the garish hotel carpet, you had better get used to seeing this V8 around town. Ford is saying that after a debut in the F-150 midway through the 2010 model year, we can expect the engine to follow in the Expedition, Navigator, E-Series vans, and F-Series SuperDuty.

Ford shoots for 100,000 Flex sales a year

The SUV exodus means Ford’s Flex has the potential to be a hit and it’s gearing up for an onslaught of orders when sales begin this summer. Ford’s group veep of marketing and communications, Jim Farley, told Automotive News that consumers leaving the full-size SUV fold and others who haven’t considered putting a Blue Oval badge in their garage might be ready to give something like the Flex a chance. CUV sales have been strong over the last year, and Ford and Farley believe that the Flex could rack up 100,000 sales annually if the trend continues.
